r-process
r-process A type of nuclear reaction proposed to explain the formation of elements heavier than bismuth, and certain neutron-rich isotopes of elements heavier than iron. These elements are produced by reactions initiated by the strong flux of neutrons from supernovae. The flux is so strong that unstable nuclei formed by the absorption of a neutron do not have time to decay before another neutron is absorbed, so that chains of reactions involving highly unstable nuclei can take place. The r-process is so named because it is rapid.
