query language
query language A language used to select data from a database satisfying various criteria. For example, such a language might be used to extract all the employees in a database who earn more than a specified salary. The two main query languages found on the Internet or in DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS are SQL, a language used to access and retrieve data in large structured databases, and the simple query languages involving KEYWORDS and BOOLEAN CONNECTIVES used in SEARCH ENGINES.

query language
query language Strictly a language for the specification of retrieval criteria against which information is obtained from a database. The term is something of a misnomer when, as with SQL, a language that originated for this purpose has been extended to include facilities for updating and for schema modification. See also query processing.
