purser
purser.
1. In the merchant marine the officer in charge of the financial side of administering a ship's crew, and particularly the passengers of cruise ships and ferries. 2. The old name by which the paymaster, and officer responsible for provisions and clothing, was known in both the British and US navies during the days of sail. In the British Navy he was placed on board a ship by the Victualling Board and was paid partly by a small direct salary and partly by a commission on the issue of the daily victualling allowance, a method of payment which led to some abuse of his responsibilities. |
