protocol stack
protocol stack The collection of protocols in a layered network architecture, together with the hierarchic relationship between the protocols. This relationship is characterized by the fact that one protocol makes use of another; for example, in the TCP-IP model, the HYPERTEXT TRANSFER PROTOCOL makes use of the INTERNET PROTOCOL to carry out the transfer of WEB PAGES from a WEB SERVER to a BROWSER. The term is often abbreviated to STACK.
