primus inter pares a Latin phrase meaning “first among equals” used to describe, for example, the Chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff with respect to the Chiefs of Staff of the Army and of the Air Force, the Chief of Naval Operations, and the Commandant of the Marine Corps.
