presentation layer The role of the presentation layer within the OSI REFERENCE MODEL is to convert data that is produced or consumed by applications residing in the application layer to a common format, so that the other layers in the model are able to understand it. For example, it converts ASCII- or EBCDIC-based data to a common format. The conversion takes place through what is known as a common network programming language. This layer also carried out the reverse process: converting the internal form of data into a form which an application such as a NEWSREADER or WEB SERVER can understand.
