(also postmortem examination) an examination of a dead body to determine the cause of death. ∎  an analysis or discussion of an event held soon after it has occurred, esp. in order to determine why it was a failure: an election postmortem on why the party lost. • adj. of or relating to a postmortem: a postmortem report. ∎  happening after death: postmortem changes in his body | [as adv.] assessment of morphology in nerves taken postmortem.

postmortem Analysis of the cause of some undesired system behavior, based upon information recorded at the time that the undesired behavior was detected. For example, abnormal termination of a program might result in a record of the state of the program at the time of termination, and this record might subsequently be used for postmortem analysis of the reason for termination.
