photodissociation

photodissociation

photodissociation The dissociation (breaking up) of molecules by exposure to light. This process occurs when light from stars shines into a cloud of cool molecular gas. If the cloud is diffuse, all the molecules may be dissociated by the light. More usually the cloud is so dense that the light penetrates only a small distance before being absorbed. Photodissociation regions are thereby formed at the edges and boundaries of the cloud.
