perennating bud

perennating bud

perennating bud (perennating organ) The vegetative means whereby biennial and perennial plants survive periods of unfavourable conditions. The aerial parts die back to a minimum at the onset of unfavourable conditions, and food for the new shoots of the next growing season is stored in underground organs (e.g. tubers, bulbs, rhizomes), or in buds on the stems of woody plants. Seeds may also be considered perennating organs.
