pentimento
pentimento , painter's term for the evidence in a work that the original composition has been changed. Often the opaque pigment with which the artist covered a mistake or unwanted beginnings will, with time or injudicious cleaning, become transparent, and a revelation of original intentions will become visible through the finished composition. A celebrated example is Caravaggio's Lute Player (Metropolitan Museum of Art) in which X-ray photography was used to uncover evidence of the painter's original intention. |

pentimento
pentimento. Term (Italian: ‘repentance’) describing a part of a picture that has been overpainted by the artist but which has become visible again (often as a ghostly outline) because the superimposed layer of pigment has become semi-transparent with age. The presence of pentimenti is often used as an argument in matters of attribution, as it is felt that such evidence of an artist's second thoughts is much more likely to occur in an original painting than in a copy.
