pennon
pennon, a long, coloured streamer flown from the mastheads or yardarms of warships in the 15th and 16th centuries on occasions of state or national importance. Although it was not particularly a naval word, naval pennons were very much longer than those flown ashore, being on occasions as much as 18–24 metres (60–80 ft) in length.
