panbiogeography The name given to a synthesis of the sciences of plant and animal distribution. The main features are that consistencies recur in distribution patterns and that analysis of these produces ‘tracks’ (joining areas of common floras and faunas) and ‘nodes’ (where different tracks meet). The name, and the associated method of analysis, are due to the Venezuelan botanist Leon Croizat. These ideas form the basis of the new school of vicariance biogeography.
