pampero
pampero, a violent squall, accompanied by heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. It blows up with great suddenness on the pampas of the Rio de la Plata plain and frequently drifts out to sea where it blows with the force of a hurricane (see tropical storm), the wind usually coming from the south-west. The 5,900-ton five-masted barque France was struck by a pampero in 1901 and had to be abandoned as a result of the damage she sustained.
