palus
palus A mottled area on a planetary surface; pl. paludes. The name, which means ‘marsh’ or ‘swamp’, was first used for features on the Moon in the 17th century. It is not a geological term, but is used in the nomenclature of individual features, for example Palus Putredinis on the Moon, or Oxia Palus on Mars.
