palus

A Dictionary of Astronomy | 1997 | Copyright

palus A mottled area on a planetary surface; pl. paludes. The name, which means ‘marsh’ or ‘swamp’, was first used for features on the Moon in the 17th century. It is not a geological term, but is used in the nomenclature of individual features, for example Palus Putredinis on the Moon, or Oxia Palus on Mars.

palus From the Latin palus meaning ‘marsh’, a term introduced by Giovanni B. Riccioli in 1651 for small patches of lunar mare basalt. The Apollo 15 mission landed in Palus Putredinis, the ‘Marsh of Decay’.
