palaeo-, U.S. paleo- comb. form of Gr. palaiós ancient, in many scientific terms often having correlatives in NEO-; among the earliest are palaeography (XVIII; — F. paléographie), palaeontology (XIX); archaeol., geol. opp. to MESO-, NEO-, as palaeolithic, palaeozoic (for palaeocene see EOCENE).
