ordinary seaman
ordinary seaman, the lowest rating on board British ships. Boys were rated ordinary seamen and began their man's time on board at the age of 18, normally being rated ABs, or able seamen, at the age of 21. The abbreviation for this rank in the Royal Navy is ‘OD’, probably derived from OrDinary, while in the US Navy the most common abbreviations are ‘OSea’ or ‘Ordy’.
