open systems interconnection
open systems interconnection (OSI) A concept whereby communications-oriented computer equipment with different protocols can be interconnected by means of a data network. The principal methods being developed are those of the major computer vendors and of the International Standards Organization (ISO). The term open systems interconnection is specifically related to the efforts of the ISO and its seven-layer reference model.

Open Systems Interconnection
Open Systems Interconnection A seven-layered architecture specification which was developed by the INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS ORGANIZATION. The standard, as the name suggests, defines the facilities required for a number of networked systems to be connected to each other. Although the INTERNET LAYERED ARCHITECTURE has five layers there are a number of similarities between them. The model is now only of historic interest.
