one hand clapping
one hand clapping. A short name for the zen riddle (kōan) ‘What is the sound of one hand clapping?’ This kōan, unlike others in Zen, did not originate from stories of Chinese Ch'an masters, but was composed by the Japanese master Hakuin Zenji (1685–1768) and presented, along with his comments, in a work entitled Yabukōji composed in 1752.
