one-time pad
one-time pad, secure method employed to encipher signals for transmission by radio. The sender and receiver used identical pads of tear-off sheets containing information for enciphering and deciphering a signal. The sender indicated which sheet he was going to use and once the message had been transmitted and deciphered both parties destroyed their copy of it. No other copies existed. Although unbreakable, it was a slow and tedious method of communicating and code books or machine ciphers (see ENIGMA, Geheimschreiber, PURPLE and Typex) were more frequently used as the war progressed. See also Navajo code talkers and signals intelligence warfare.
