ogee

ogee

ogee. Upright double curve, concave at the top and convex at the bottom, as in the cyma recta (a cyma reversa or Lesbian cymatium, with the convex curve at the top and the concave below, is called a reverse ogee). A moulding with an ogee profile is called ogee moulding, ressant, ressaunt, or ressaut. Reverse ogee-headed canopies or openings are characteristic of Second Pointed work, especially over funerary monuments, niches, sedilia, and shrines, as well as in tracery, where it continued well into the Perpendicular period. A nodding ogee is a canopy of two ogee arches joined at the apex and bowing outwards from the wall in another ogee double curve, so ogee in elevation as well as in section.
