nirupadhiśeṣa-nirvāṇa

nirupadhiśeṣa-nirvāṇa (Skt.; Pāli, nirupādhisesa-nibbāna). ‘Nirvāṇa without remainder’, an alternative designation for the nirvāṇa that is attained at death. Also known as ‘final’ nirvāṇa or parinirvāṇa. The remainder or residue referred to (upādhi) is the five aggregates (skandha) that consitute individuality, and which cease at the point when nirupādhiśeṣa-nirvāṇa is attained. For this reason the state is also known in Pāli sources as ‘the nirvāṇa of the aggregates’ (khandha-parinibbāna). One who attains this nirvāṇa is not reborn. This condition is accordingly to be distinguished from sopādhiśeṣa-nirvāṇa or ‘nirvāṇa with remainder’, where the embodied individual continues to exist.

Nirupadhiśeṣa-nirvāṇa

Nirupadhiśeṣa-nirvāṇa (Skt.; Pāli, anupadisesa-nibbāna). Nirvāna with no lingering conditions remaining—as opposed to nirvāna which is attained, but with residual shadows of previous existence still continuing. The latter condition means that the Buddha can be completely enlightened, but his bodily appearance continues, so that he can, for example, teach others. Parinirvāṇa is then the attainment of complete nirvāna at death (though parinirvāṇa can also mean nirvāna before death, hence the present term). Cf., but contrast, the Mahāyāna pratiṣṭhita-nirvāna.
