nao

nao

nao, the Spanish word for a ship during the 13th–16th centuries. It was not any particular type of vessel, only the general word meaning ship. The three ships with which Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic in 1492, though caravels in type, were all described as naos in contemporary Spanish records.
