moha

moha

moha (Pāli). ‘Delusion’, one of the three roots of evil (akuśala-mūla), which, together with craving (lobha) and hatred (dveṣa), leads to rebirth and suffering in cyclic existence (saṃsāra). Moha is synonymous with ignorance (avidyā), which is the first link in the series of Dependent Origination (pratītya-samutpāda) and which must be removed if suffering (duḥkha) is to cease. Most fundamentally, moha and avidyā relate to ignorance about the true nature of things as summarized in the Four Noble Truths. This includes ignorance of one's own nature and that of the world at large and manifests itself in the belief that phenomena are permanent and stable, and that a self or soul (ātman) underlies personal identity. The way to cleanse the mind of these misconceptions is through the practice of the Eightfold Path, which destroys delusion and replaces it with insight (prajñā).

Moha (Pāli, Skt.). ‘Delusion’, which prevents discernment of truth in Hinduism and Buddhism. In the latter, it is one of the three ‘unwholesome roots’ (akuśalamūla) which, together with craving (lobha)—or attachment (raga)—and hatred (dosa) leads to rebirth and suffering in cyclic existence (saṃsāra).
