modillion

modillion

modillion. Projecting bracket resembling a horizontal rather than vertical console fixed in series under the soffit of the cornice of the Composite, Corinthian, and (occasionally) Roman Ionic Orders, expressive of a cantilever. Modillions are regularly spaced, their centre-lines relating to the vertical axes of columns, and have coffers set between them under the corona. A plain rectangular block in the same position is a block or uncut modillion, or a variety of mutule.
