millennium

millennium

millennium a period of a thousand years, especially when calculated from the traditional date of the birth of Christ. In the Christian Church, the term is also used for the period of one thousand years during which (according to one interpretation of Revelation 20:1–5), Christ will reign in person on earth.

Recorded from the mid 17th century, the word is modern Latin, from mille ‘thousand’, on the pattern of biennium.
millennium bug informal name for a predicted problem with some computers arising from an inability of the software to deal correctly with dates of 1 January 2000 or later, through the misinterpretation of a two-digit number (as 87, 99) used to represent a year without specifying the century concerned.

millennium

millennium A thousand years. Christian apologists, explaining the delay in the return of Christ to the world, appealed to Ps. 90: 4—in the sight of God a thousand years are but as yesterday (2 Pet. 3: 8). Rev. (17: 1–18: 24) expected the End quite soon, after which there would be a millennium. In this time faithful Christians would reign together with Christ (Rev. 20: 1–6), and then Satan would be allowed a final assault before being banished for ever into the lake of fire and brimstone (20: 7–14).

‘Millennium’ is often used to refer to the era of total bliss (beyond the thousand years of Rev.) where God reigns for eternity.

millennium

millennium [Lat.,=1,000 years], the period of 1,000 years in which, according to some schools of Christian eschatology, Christ will reign again gloriously on earth. Belief in the millennium, based on Rev. 20, has recurred in Christianity since the earliest times. Today it is held and taught by the Adventists and some other conservative evangelical bodies. Belief in the millennium is called chiliasm by historians of the ancient church. See Judgment Day .
