meridian circle
meridian circle A telescope with an accurately calibrated circle which is constrained to rotate in the plane of the meridian about an east-west horizontal axis. The altitude at which the telescope is aimed at the time of an observation is obtained by measuring the circle divisions with a series of fixed microscopes, usually four or six.
