martingale
martingale.
1. The stays, usually of chain, which hold down the ends of the jib-boom and the flying jib-boom against the loading of the head stays just as the bobstay does with the bowsprit. They are taken from the end of each spar down to the cap of the dolphin striker which is supported by martingale stays taken to each side of the hull. In early usage before the term dolphin striker was in use the bumpkin itself was called the martingale. 2. The kicking strap of a sailing boat is also sometimes called a martingale. |
