maraṇa
maraṇa (Skt.; Pali, death). General term meaning death. In Buddhist thought this has two senses. (1) Physical death as it occurs at the end of life: in this sense maraṇa is the twelfth link in the chain of Dependent Origination (pratītya-samutpāda). (2) Death as the dying process: in this sense, particularly common in the Abhidharma, death occurs continuously as each moment perishes to be replaced by the next. Death in both senses is a product of the universal principle of anitya, or impermanence.
