manger
manger, a small space in the bows of a ship immediately abaft the hawsepipes and bounded on the after side by a low coaming called a manger-board. Its purpose was to prevent any water from running aft along the deck should it enter through the hawsepipes. It applied principally to sailing ships and the early steamships when the hawsepipes were on the maindeck level. In modern ships, where the hawsepipes are on the forecastle deck level, the same purpose is achieved by an athwartships breakwater abaft the cable-holders.
