mailing list

mailing list

mailing list A list of users who have expressed an interest in a particular topic and who wish to receive regular news via EMAIL about the topic. A mailing list can also contain users who are related to each other in some way: for example, technical staff who are UNIX systems administrators. Mailing lists can be private to a network—for example a mailing list for a business may be one which includes senior staff responsible for marketing; or it could be public—for example a mailing list for users of the Internet who are interested in woodworking. To subscribe to a mailing list is usually very easy. Often all that is required is to send an email to a MAILING LIST SERVER with a simple message such as ‘Subscribe’ in it. Web-based mailing lists often make use of forms. Increasingly mailing lists are being used by ECOMMERCE enterprises to keep in contact with their customers. A mailing list where the subscribers can contribute is known as a LISTSERV.
