lychgate

lychgate a roofed gateway to a churchyard, formerly used at burials for sheltering a coffin until the clergyman's arrival; a lychway is a path along which a corpse has been carried to burial, which was supposed in some districts to establish a right of way. The first element comes from Old English līc ‘body’.
