lord chancellor of Ireland

lord chancellor of Ireland

lord chancellor of Ireland. The earliest chancellor of Ireland was Stephen Ridel, appointed in 1189. An Irish Chancery was established in 1232 and granted to the chancellor of England, who normally executed the duties by deputy. Later the office was held by English lawyers. As a result, the development of the Irish Chancery followed closely that of the English equity system. Since 1922 there has been one lord chancellor for the whole of the United Kingdom, who is always chosen from the English bench or bar.
