longboat
longboat, the largest boat carried on board ships in the 18th century. It was carvel built with a full bow and high sides, and furnished with a mast and sails. A ship's gun could also be mounted in the bows. Its principal uses on board were to transport heavy stores to and from the ship and to take empty water casks ashore to be refilled whenever fresh water was required. It was also the principal lifeboat carried on board and was kept fully provisioned for use in any emergency. It was from the longboat that the launch was developed as the major warship's boat during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
