load line
load line, the line on a merchant ship's hull which indicates the maximum depth to which it can be loaded, taking into account the potential hazards present in different zones at different seasons. The first International Convention on Load Lines, adopted in 1930, was based on the principle of reserve buoyancy. However, it was also recognized that a ship's freeboard should also ensure adequate stability and avoid excessive stress on the ship's hull as a result of overloading. In 1966 the Load Lines Convention was adopted by the International Maritime Organization in which provisions were made to determine the freeboard of tankers by subdivision and damage stability calculations. The latest (2004) amendments include regulations on such matters as the position, strength, and safety of openings in a ship including hatches, doorways, and ventilators, etc. See also plimsoll line.
