leeway
leeway, the distance a ship is set down to leeward of its course by the action of wind or tide. A vessel can make a lot of leeway if a strong cross tide is running or if its keel is not long enough or deep enough to hold it up to the wind. The word also has a colloquial meaning as having fallen behind in something: ‘he has a lot of leeway to catch up’ to reach the required position or standard.

lee·way / ˈlēˌwā/ • n. 1. the amount of freedom to move or act that is available: the government had several months' leeway to introduce reforms. ∎ margin of safety: there is little leeway if anything goes wrong. 2. the sideways drift of a ship or an aircraft to leeward of the desired course: the leeway is only about 2°. |
