lea
lea tract of open ground, (hence) grassland. OE. lēa(h), corr. to OHG. lōh (MHG. low brush-wood, scrub-land) :- Gmc. *lauχ- :- IE. *louq-, repr. also by L. lūcus grove, Lith. laūkas field. Skr. loká- open space; the basic meaning was prob. ‘clearing’, and developed from that of LIGHT1.
