layer
layer Many computer systems are defined in terms of a layered architecture. For example, the INTERNET LAYERED ARCHITECTURE is based on a five-layer model and the OSI REFERENCE MODEL is based on a seven-layer architecture. Each layer provides functionally distinct services to the other layers: for example, one layer may be responsible for checking correct transmission of data, with the top layer providing a service to programs that use the architecture. Each layer draws on services provided by the next layer down.
