larboard

larboard

larboard, the old term for the left-hand side of a ship when facing forward, now known as port. During the early years of the 19th century the term larboard began to give way to port as a helm order as this avoided confusion with the similar sounding starboard. The change was made official in 1844. See also lade, to.
