lacus
lacus A small, irregular dark patch on a planetary surface; pl.lacus. The name is not a geological term, but is used in the nomenclature of individual features, for example Lacus Somniorum on the Moon and Solis Lacus on Mars. The word means ‘lake’, and was first applied to lunar features in the 17th century, when it was thought the dark patches might be bodies of water.
