jeep
jeep, four-wheel-drive vehicle which the US Army Chief of Staff, George Marshall, said was the USA's greatest contribution to modern warfare. Eisenhower believed it was one of the three tools which won the Allies the war (the Dakota aircraft and landing craft were the other two). Early prototypes were made by several companies but Willys-Overland won the initial contract in July 1941 to build 16,000 at a cost of $739 each. By the end of 1945, 653,568 had been manufactured many of them for the Lend-Lease programme. The name probably came from the initials GP (General Purpose), but perhaps from a comic-strip character called Eugene the Jeep.

Jeep
Jeep jeep trademark a small sturdy all-purpose vehicle first mass-produced for use in the U.S. military in 1940. Made with the ruggedness of a truck and the speed and maneuverability of a light automobile, standard Jeeps could haul more than half a ton and travel easily over mud or rough terrain. In the 1980s, the larger Humvee replaced the Jeep for military use.

jeep
jeep small, durable automotive vehicle intended for heavy-duty applications and sometimes provided with the capability of delivering driving power to all four wheels. The last feature allows superior performance on slippery surfaces such as those formed by ice or mud. The earliest jeeps were used by U.S. military services during World War II. |
