jackdaw
jackdaw. Although resembling and related to the crow, this common European bird (species Corvus monedula) is sometimes represented as talking in different Celtic traditions. Those of Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry, Ireland, asked to enter the town so that they might escape the depredations of the crows. The king refused permission, on the advice of his druid, but relented when the jackdaws found a missing magical ring that defended all of Munster from a Fomorian attack. ModIr. cág; ScG cathag-fhireann; Manx caaig, doochassagh; W corfran, jac-y-do; Corn. choga; Bret. palorez.
