hooker

hooker

hooker.
1. A fishing vessel which, as its name suggested, was probably used for line fishing. A development of the original ketch, it was a short, tubby little vessel with main- and mizzen-masts, originally square rigged on the main and with a small topsail above a fore-and-aft-rigged sail hoisted on a gaff on the mizzen. It usually set two jibs on a high-steeved bowsprit, and early in the 18th century it became a distinct type of vessel in its own right, as opposed to the generic ketch. The rig was much favoured for Dutch fishing craft.

2. The name is also used, slightly contemptuously, for any vessel when it grows old and slow, or has perhaps come down a bit in the maritime world.
