hemi-
hemi-. Greek word meaning ‘half’. It prefixes other words in architectural terminology. Examples include:hemi-cycle: semicircular room, part of a room, or area off a court, forum, garden, etc. A large exedra. Also a semicircular vault or arch;hemi-dome: half-dome, as over an apse or niche;hemi-glyph: half-glyph or chamfer on each side of a triglyph in the Doric Order;hemi-sphaerium: dome;hemi-triglyph: half-triglyph-block as in an internal corner of a frieze, touching another.
