hake / hāk/ (pl. same or hakes) • n. 1. a large-headed elongated food fish (genus Merluccius, family Merlucciidae) with long jaws and strong teeth. 2. any of a number of similar fishes related to the true hakes, esp. those of the northwestern Atlantic genus Urophycis (family Phycidae).
