guy¹ / gī/ • n. 1. inf. a man: he's a nice guy. ∎ (guys) people of either sex: you guys want some coffee? 2. Brit. a figure representing Guy Fawkes, burned on a bonfire on Guy Fawkes' Night, and often displayed by children begging for money for fireworks. • v. [tr.] make fun of; ridicule: he didn't realize I was guying the whole idea. guy² • n. a rope or line fixed to the ground to secure a tent or other structure. • v. [tr.] secure with a line or lines: it was set on concrete footings and guyed with steel cable.

Guy ♂ From an Old French name, of Germanic (Frankish) origin, originally a short form of a compound name starting with witu ‘wood’ or wīt ‘wide’. This was adopted by the Normans and introduced by them to England. In Old French initial w- regularly became gu-. The usual Norman forms of the name were Gy or Guido. In medieval Latin the same name is found as Wido. It was a popular name among the Normans, enhanced no doubt by the romance of Guy of Warwick, recounting the exploits of a folk hero of the Crusades.

1. A rope or tackle used to control the lateral movement of a derrick.

2. A rope or wire led forward from a boom as part of the running rigging of a fore-and-aft-rigged vessel. In sailing yachts, a guy, called a boom guy, may be rigged between the end of the boom and a point well forward when running free, particularly in light winds, or when the yacht is rolling in a swell. A spinnaker boom nearly always needs a boom guy (or spinnaker guy) because the sheet of this sail has less control of it than the sheet of a mainsail.
