grommet
grommet (pron. grummet), a ring formed by laying up a single strand of rope three times, and used originally to form eyes on the bolt-ropes of sails. It has long been replaced by the spring-loaded hank or clip-hook. Grommets have various other uses on board ship and, when the two sides of one are brought together by a serving, it forms a couple of connected eyes, always a useful article to have available on deck. Grommets were also used to hold the oars to thole pins when rowing.

grom·met / ˈgrämit/ • n. 1. an eyelet placed in a hole in a sheet or panel to protect or insulate a rope or cable passed through it or to prevent the sheet or panel from being torn. 2. Med. a tube surgically implanted in the eardrum to drain fluid from the middle ear. 3. inf. a young or inexperienced skier, snowboarder, surfer, or skateboarder: mega moves that make gods out of grommets. |
