glut

glut

glut.
1. A term used for a becket secured to the aft side of the heavier course sails on the centreline just above the reef-bands. The bunt jigger, or bunt whip, was hooked into the glut when the sail was nearly furled and used to roll it up into its stowed position. The sail is reinforced with a canvas patch for the glut.

2. When used as a verb it denotes the prevention of slipping; e.g. a messenger was said to be glutted when it was prevented by nippers from slipping on the cable to which it was bound.
