gisant
gisant. French term used from the 15th century onwards for a recumbent effigy on a funerary monument. In Renaissance monuments gisants often formed part of a lower register, where the deceased person was represented as a corpse (sometimes in decomposition), while on the upper part he or she was represented orant (praying), as if alive.
