gasket

gasket

gasket, a rope, plaited cord, or strip of canvas used to secure a sail, when furled, to a yard or boom of a vessel. In large square-rigged ships gaskets were passed with three or four turns round both sail and yard, with the turns spaced well out. The bunt gasket, which had to hold the bunt, the heaviest part of a square sail when furled, was sometimes made of strong netting. In the old seamanship manuals of the 17th and early 18th centuries the word is sometimes written as caskets. The modern term, used by yachtsmen, is ‘tier’.
