galactic nucleus

galactic nucleus

galactic nucleus The very central regions of a galaxy. A galaxy's nucleus often has a complex structure, with a dense cluster of stars within the inner few light years, and it can be the site of considerable activity. If the activity is high, with considerably more radiation emitted than can be accounted for by normal formation and evolution of stars, it is classed as an active galactic nucleus.
